고양시 서오릉 가까이 위치한 이 대지 인근에는 작은 산책로가 존재한다.
이 산책로는 왕릉 방문 후 간단한 식사를 마친 이들이 걷는 산책로이다. 건축주는 왕릉을 찾는 이들이
식사를 마치고 가벼운 산책길을 오르는 시작 점에 위치한 이 커다란 건축을 “오름“이라 지칭하고자 했다.
많은 사람들이 삭막한 도시와 지친 일상에서 벗어나 쉼을 찾고자 할 때 자연을 찾는다.
그러한 이유는 아마도 유동적으로 끊임없이 변화하며 그로 인해 우리에게 새로운 경험과 다채로운 감성을
전달해주고 그 모습에서 경외감과 편안함을 느끼기 때문이라고 생각한다.
카페 오름 (The Oreum) 은 이러한 클라이언트의 바람을 담아 브랜드의 이야기를 풀어나갔고 그저
카페에서 끝나는 것이 아니라 자연에서 느낄 수 있는 다양한 경험을 할 수 있는 문화 공간으로 기획하였다.
오름 (The oreum) 이라는 단어가 가진 큰 의미는 단어 그대로, 그리고 단어를 구성하고 있는 각 요소들로,
"오름이라는 작은 산을 오르며 느끼는 감각적인 경험들과 감성, 그리고 변화하는 풍경을 느끼는 행위" 이었다.
도심에서 벗어나 다소 가볍게 오르는 행위와 온전히 자연을 바라보며, 그 속에서 여러 오감적 감각을
느낄 수 있는 새로운 경험들 속에 자연을 닮은 본질적인 공간 뿐 아니라 온전한 휴식을 할 수 있는
공간을 선사하고자 하는 이름 그대로 "오름" 이라는 감성적이고 경험적인 체험형 공간을 만들고자 하였다.
이러한 공간을 상상하였고 그러한 요소들이 공간을 풀어낼 핵심 요소라고 생각했다,
총 3개의 층과 Roof top 으로 구성된 공간은 각 층 별로 각기 다른 감각을 열어주는 공간으로 기획하여
한층 한층 서서히 오르며 서로 다른 경험을 느낄 수 있도록 의도하였다.
어떠한 스토리로 인해 이러한 공간이 만들어졌는지 모든 이들이 공감할 수 있을 때 그 속에서 느끼는
시각적인 부분 뿐 아니라 감각적인 경험까지 극대화 될 수 있다고 생각했다.
THE OREUM
오름은 이름 그대로 브랜딩의 시작이었던 작은 산을 닮은 공간을 통해 여러 감각적이고 극적인 경험들과
다양한 감성을 느낄 수 있는 이야기를 전달하고자 했다. 이상에서 다소 얕게 느꼈던 다양한 오감의 경험을
통하여 회색 도시에 익숙해져 있던 인간이라는 또 다른 자연은 이곳. 오름을 통해 온전한 자연을 느끼며
복잡하고 지친 일상 속 완전한 쉼과 편안한 안식을 주는 공간이길 바란다.
Near Seorung in Goyang City lies a modest walking trail, gently winding through the quiet landscape.
This trail is often taken by visitors to the royal tombs—after a simple meal, they stroll its path, letting their steps unwind.
At the trail’s starting point stands a large structure, and the architect chose to name it “The Oreum”, signifying the beginning of a quiet ascent.
When seeking rest from the harshness of urban life and the fatigue of routine, people instinctively turn to nature.
Perhaps it is because nature, with its fluid and ever-changing form, constantly offers new experiences and a rich palette of emotions—
delivering awe, comfort, and peace in equal measure.
Café Oreum was born from this very desire.
It was envisioned not merely as a café, but as a cultural space—
a place to encounter the many textures of nature through sensory and emotional experience.
The word “Oreum”, which means “a small hill” or “an ascent” in Korean, carries layered significance.
Its meaning lies not only in its literal translation,
but also in the act itself—
the experience of climbing a gentle slope, sensing the shifting landscape, and embracing the emotions that unfold along the way.
Escaping the city, ascending lightly, gazing out fully into nature—
this is the kind of experiential, emotional journey The Oreum seeks to create.
A space not only inspired by nature, but a space that becomes nature itself.
A place where one can rest, breathe deeply, and reconnect with the essence of being.
This vision shaped the foundation of the space.
Comprising three levels and a rooftop, each floor was designed to awaken a different sense—
inviting visitors to ascend step by step, each level offering a unique and immersive experience.
We believe that when people understand the story behind a space,
their visual and sensory perceptions within it become richer and more meaningful.
Through emotional resonance, the physical becomes experiential.
The Oreum,
true to its name, began with the idea of a small hill.
And through this concept, it seeks to deliver dramatic and sensory-rich encounters—
rekindling the five senses dulled by the grayness of city life.
In doing so, it invites visitors to rediscover their own nature,
and to find stillness, vitality, and genuine rest amidst a tired and complex world.
수(水)의 환영 Illusion of Water
2층으로 올라오면 오름 안에 있는 동굴을 닮은 공간이 존재한다. 동굴 초입 산줄기 어디서부터인가 내려오는 물의 흐름은 물방울이 떨어지며 내는 물의 파동 소리가 우리에게 환영(歡迎)하며 맞이하고 환영(幻影)을 불러일으킨다.
The second floor reveals a cave-like space within The Oreum. At the entrance of the cave,
somewhere along the mountain ridge, water flows down, creating ripples and a gentle sound of droplets that welcomes visitors with an illusion of water.
화려한 침묵 The silence of splendid
초입부 한켠에 마치 수정동굴처럼 아름다운 형형색색의 화려하게 빛나는 물질이 숨죽이며 공간을 밝히는 "화려한 침묵"의 공간이 나타난다. 시선에 따라 때로는 밝게, 때로는 어둡게 빛나는 수정 동굴이 빛의 반복과 물의 흐름에 녹아들어 또 다른 현상을 만들어내어 화려하게 빛나며 묵묵히 존재한다. 어두운 동굴 속의 각종 보석들이 찬란하게 빛나는 빛과 물의 흐름을 통해 아름다움 이라는 본연의 감정과 빛의 투과, 그리고 반사로 인해 다양한 감정과 정서적 충만함을 전달하고자 했다.
In a section of the entrance, there appears a space resembling a crystal cave, where beautiful and dazzling substances quietly illuminate the area, creating a “The silence ofsplendid." Depending on the perspective, this crystal cave shines brightly or dims in the
repetition of light and flow of water, blending into another phenomenon, silently rested.
The various gems within the dark cave shine brilliantly, conveying the inherent emotion of beauty through light penetration and reflection, evoking feelings of emotional richness and fulfillment.
안개의 무도 Dance of Mist
물이 흐르는 좁은 길(수의 환영)을 지나오면 바닥에서 피어오르는 물안개가 끊임없이 움직이는 공간에 도착한다. 높, 낮이가 다른 동굴을 돌아다니듯 각기 다른 높이로 되어 있는 바닥의 단은 전면의 자연을 바라봄에 있어 서로 간섭 받지 않게 설계하였으며 서서히 움직이는 안개의 무도 속에서 춤추는 안개의 흐름을 느낀다. 어둑함 속 어렴풋이 빛나는 잔양을 따라 진입하면서 목격되는 회색빛의 큰 돌과 그 사이 싱그러운 녹색의 이끼는 빛과 함께 어우러진다.
Following a narrow path of flowing water, visitors will be reached a space where mist rises continuously from the ground. The floor, designed at varying heights like a cave, ensures unobstructed views of the surrounding nature. The dance of the mist creates a dynamic, ethereal atmosphere. Large gray stones and lush green moss, illuminated by the subtle light, blend together harmoniously.
동굴에서 In the Cave
온갖 상반되는 물성이
서로를 찬란히 비추며
조화를 이룬다.
단단하고 부드러운
경계에서 만들어가는
어느 기억의 한 조각.
In this space,
all opposing elements
shine brilliantly upon one another—
finding harmony in contrast.
At the threshold
where hardness meets softness,
a fragment of memory
quietly takes form.
시간의 화백 Painter of Time
전면의 창가 수(水) 공간을 통해 안과 밖의 경계가 모호해져 자연 그대로의 모습이 공간 내부까지 들어오게 하였으며 천장의 반사 소재를 활용하여 그 효과를 더욱 극대화시켰다. 펼쳐진 자연 앞 고요히 흐르는 물에 비친 자연을 바라보며, 계절마다, 날씨마다 변화하는 자연이 그려낸 '시간의 화백' 공간에서 시간이라는 화백이 변화하는 자연을 물 위에 고스란히 그려내는 작품을 감상하며 물소리에 귀 기울이며 이 곳에 차분히 앉아 온전히 휴식을 취하길 바랬다.
음영의 깊고 낮은 곳이 반영된 공간 속 고요함과 화려함이 연출된 이곳에서 평소에 보던 자연의 모습 뿐 아니라 그 안에서 새로운 시선으로 바라보며 사색할 수 있도록 의도하였다.
Through the front window, the boundary between inside and outside blurs, bringing the
natural scenery indoors. Reflective materials on the ceiling amplify this effect, allowing visitors to view the changing natural landscape in the "Painter of Time" space.
The designer intentionally crafted to reflect the tranquility amidst the deep shadows and low-lit areas, this space juxtaposes serenity with splendor. It's designed to encourage
contemplation, offering not just familiar views of nature but also presenting them in a new light for introspection.
돌의 구연 Narrative of Stone
이 공간은 어두운 공간 속 돌과 어두운 유리 테이블이 놓여있다. 돌을 중심으로 사람들이 둘러앉아 돌을 바라보고, 그들이 하는 이야기를 들을 수 있는 공간이다. 석양이 지며 어두운 공간에 잠시 붉은색의 색감이 차분히 녹아든다.
In this darker space, a stone and a dark glass table become the focal points around which
people gather to share stories. The setting sun gently imbues the area with a soft, red hue.
숲의 향연 Feast of the Forest
반대편에는 외부에 있는 느티나무 나뭇가지와 잎사귀가 마치 손에 닿을 거리에 위치한다. 느티나무에 울창하게 열린 잎사귀들과 천장의 나뭇잎은 무한히 반복하여 마치 외부 공간처럼 공간을 확장한다. 이곳에서 사람들은 숲의 특별한 대접을 받으며 숲 한가운데 나뭇잎에서 떨어지는 빛 아래에서 편안한 분위기에 휴식한다.
Opposite, branches and leaves of a nearby Japanese zelkova tree seems to get quite close to touch. The abundant leaves and the repeated patterns of the ceiling leaves expand the space, making it feel like the outdoors. Here, people enjoy the special ambiance of the forest, resting under the light filtering through the leaves.
