민들레울, 사계절 너머, 자연의 숨결에 머무는 또 하나의 세계
민들레울이 바라보는 공간은 두 가지 철학으로부터 시작된다.
첫 번째는 사시지외(四時之外)이다.
사계절이라는 구분된 시간 너머, 모든 계절을 품고 확장된 또 하나의 세계. 민들레울에서는 계절이 단순한 변화의 배경이 아니라 공간을 구성하는 본질적인 요소로 작용한다. 창밖의 나무는 초록에서 붉게 물들고, 빛의 각도는 시간에 따라 달라지며, 비와 눈이 머무는 순간조차 공간의 일부가 된다. 이곳은 시간을 소비하는 장소가 아니라, 자연의 흐름 속에서 시간을 감각하는 공간이다.
두 번째는 대괴애기(大塊噫氣)이다.
대지와 자연이 내쉬는 깊은 숨결, 그리고 그 숨결이 만들어내는 보이지 않는 움직임을 뜻한다. 민들레울의 중심에 놓인 수공간과 식재는 이러한 자연의 호흡을 공간적으로 드러내는 장치다. 물이 흐르고, 빛이 흔들리며, 계절에 따라 식재가 변화하는 과정은 자연이 살아 움직이는 감각을 건축 안으로 끌어들인다. 돌과 나무, 바람과 물이 만들어내는 경험은 시각을 넘어 청각과 촉각으로 확장되며, 방문객은 자연을 ‘보는 존재’가 아니라 자연 속에 머무는 존재가 된다.
포천 고모리의 산과 숲에 안겨 있는 민들레울은 단순히 식사를 위한 레스토랑이 아니다. 이곳은 자연을 담아내기 위한 건축이며, 계절과 풍경, 그리고 시간의 흐름을 경험하는 공간이다.
민들레울은 오랜 시간 산채 한정식 식당으로 이어져 온 공간을 기반으로 공간의 본질적인 구조와 기억은 유지하면서, 오늘의 감각에 맞는 모던 퓨전 한식당으로 새롭게 재구성되었다. 전통을 단순히 재현하는 것이 아니라 한옥이 지닌 구조적 아름다움과 장소가 품고 있던 시간을 바탕으로, 과거와 현재가 자연스럽게 이어지는 공간으로 완성되었다.
Mindeulleul: Beyond the Four Seasons, Another World Dwelling within Nature’s Breath
The space envisioned by Mindeulleul begins with two core philosophies.
The first is Sasi-ji-oe (四時之外)—meaning "beyond the four seasons." It represents an expanded world that embraces all seasons, transcending the rigid boundaries of divided time. At Mindeulleul, the seasons are not a mere backdrop for change, but an essential element that shapes the space itself. The trees outside the window turn from vibrant green to deep crimson, the angle of the light shifts with the hours, and even the moments when rain and snow fall become part of the architecture. This is not a place to consume time, but a space to truly feel and experience its flow within the rhythm of nature.
The second is Daegwae-aegi (大塊噫氣)—signifying the deep breath exhaled by the earth and nature, and the invisible movements born from that breath. The water features and curated flora at the heart of Mindeulleul are spatial devices designed to reveal this natural respiration. The flowing water, the shimmering light, and the seasonal evolution of the plants bring the living, breathing essence of nature directly into the architecture. The experience created by stone, wood, wind, and water expands beyond the visual into the auditory and tactile. Here, visitors are not merely observers "looking at" nature, but beings dwelling deeply within it.
Nestled in the mountains and forests of Gomori, Pocheon, Mindeulleul is far more than just a restaurant for dining. It is a piece of architecture designed to cradle nature, offering a space to experience the seasons, the landscape, and the passage of time.
Rooted in a space that has long served traditional wild vegetable hanjeongsik (Korean full-course dining), Mindeulleul has been reimagined into a modern fusion Korean restaurant tailored to contemporary sensibilities, all while preserving the essential structure and memories of the land. Rather than simply reproducing tradition, it seamlessly bridges the past and the present, drawing upon the structural beauty of the hanok (traditional Korean house) and the time embedded in the location itself.
민들레울의 여정은 건물로 향하는 진입부에서부터 시작된다. 길을 따라 들어서면 가장 먼저 시선에 들어오는 것은 오래된 옹기와 그 사이에서 자라난 식재들이다. 오래된 시간의 결을 품은 옹기와 이끼, 초목이 어우러져 인위적으로 꾸며진 정원이 아닌, 시간이 쌓여 자연스럽게 형성된 풍경을 만들어낸다. 방문객은 이 공간을 지나며 도시의 시간에서 벗어나 자연의 시간 속으로 천천히 스며들게 된다.
The journey of Mindeulleul begins at the very entrance leading to the building. As you step along the path, the first things that catch your eye are the aged onggi (traditional Korean earthenware jars) and the plants growing between them. The harmony of these time-worn jars, moss, and wild greenery creates a landscape born naturally from the accumulation of time, rather than an artificially manicured garden. Passing through this threshold, visitors gently drift away from the hurried pace of urban time, slowly immersing themselves into the rhythm of nature.
실내로 들어서는 순간 가장 먼저 체감되는 것은 시원하게 열리는 공간의 깊이다. 낮은 처마 아래를 지나 펼쳐지는 시선은 공간 전체를 한 번에 감싸며, 전통 한옥이 지닌 개방감을 현대적인 방식으로 재해석한다. 기둥과 보가 만들어내는 구조적 리듬은 자연의 풍경과 겹쳐지며 안과 밖의 경계를 점차 흐리게 만든다.
홀의 중심에는 단상이 놓여 있다. 이 단상은 단순한 조형물이 아니라 공간의 흐름을 정리하는 기준점이자 시선의 중심이다. 그 주변으로 배치된 식재는 실내에 자연의 밀도를 더하며, 과거 한옥의 마당이 지녔던 기능을 현대적으로 변환한 장치로 작동한다. 머무름과 이동, 시선과 여백이 이 지점에서 교차한다.
The moment you step inside, the very first thing you experience is the sweeping depth of the space that opens up before you. Passing beneath the low eaves, the view expands to embrace the entire interior at once, reinterpreting the openness of traditional hanok in a modern framework. The structural rhythm crafted by the pillars and beams overlaps with the natural scenery outside, gradually blurring the boundary between the interior and the exterior.
At the center of the hall lies a raised platform. Rather than a mere decorative sculpture, this platform serves as an anchor that organizes the flow of the space and focuses the viewer's gaze. The curated plants arranged around it add natural density to the interior, functioning as a contemporary reinterpretation of the traditional hanok courtyard. It is at this exact point that pausing and moving, vision and emptiness intersect.
단상을 지나면 길게 이어지는 식재와 수공간이 공간의 깊이를 확장한다. 실내 깊숙이 들어온 자연은 건축 내부에서 또 하나의 풍경으로 재구성되며, 수면 위로 피어오르는 안개는 공간에 시간의 결을 더한다. 물의 흐름과 빛의 반사, 습도의 변화는 마치 작은 계곡을 실내로 옮겨 놓은 듯한 감각을 만든다.
Past the raised platform, a long stretch of curated greenery and a water feature expand the depth of the space. Nature, brought deep inside the building, is reconfigured into a distinct landscape within the architecture, while the mist rising softly above the water’s surface adds a textured layer of time to the space. The flow of water, the reflection of light, and the subtle shift in humidity evoke the sensory experience of a small valley transported indoors.
민들레울에서 가장 중요한 건축적 장치는 차경(借景)이다. 과감하게 비워낸 구조와 넓게 열린 창은 실내와 실외의 경계를 흐리며 주변의 숲과 산세를 공간 안으로 끌어들인다. 창은 단순한 개구부가 아니라 풍경을 담아내는 프레임으로 작동하고, 건축은 자연을 가장 또렷하게 경험하게 하는 장치가 된다.
이를 위해 창호와 창살 또한 현대적으로 재해석하였다. 전통 한옥의 비례와 리듬은 유지하되 철제 프레임을 사용하여 시각적 무게감을 덜어냈다. 자연을 가두는 경계가 아니라, 자연을 더욱 선명하게 드러내는 장치로서 기능한다.
The most crucial architectural element at Mindeulleul is chagyeong (借景)—the traditional principle of "borrowing scenery." The boldly open structures and expansive windows blur the boundary between inside and out, drawing the surrounding forests and mountain ridges deep into the space. Here, a window is not merely an opening, but a framing device that captures the scenery, turning the architecture itself into an instrument for experiencing nature at its clearest.
To achieve this, the windows and traditional latticework (changsal) have been reinterpreted through a modern lens. While preserving the proportions and rhythmic essence of a traditional hanok, the use of steel frames sheds any visual heaviness. Consequently, they do not function as barriers that confine nature, but rather as devices that reveal it with even greater clarity.
민들레울은 한국적인 아름다움을 화려한 장식으로 표현하지 않는다. 비워낸 공간, 절제된 재료, 그리고 자연을 향해 열린 시선을 통해 한국적 미감의 본질을 이야기한다. 전통과 현대, 안과 밖, 시간과 장소의 경계가 부드럽게 연결되며 자연과 시간이 함께 만들어낸 공간 경험을 제안한다.
회색 도시를 벗어나 사계절 너머의 풍경 속으로 들어가는 곳. 민들레울은 자연과 식사가 하나의 흐름으로 이어지는 모던 퓨전 한식 공간이다.
Mindeulleul does not express Korean beauty through lavish decoration. Instead, it speaks to the essence of Korean aesthetics through empty space, restrained materials, and a gaze left wide open toward nature. By softly dissolving the boundaries between tradition and modernity, interior and exterior, and time and place, it offers a spatial experience crafted in tandem by nature and time.
A place where one escapes the gray city to step into a landscape that lies far beyond the four seasons. Mindeulleul is a modern fusion Korean dining space where nature and cuisine flow seamlessly as one.
