시나루, 시간을 초월하는 나루터
대한민국 인천 개항장 역사문화의 거리에 위치한 이곳은 약 130여 년의 시간을 품은
건축물과 유적, 박물관 등 다양한 역사적 자원을 간직한 장소다.
인천 개항장은 조선이 근대 국가로 나아가던 전환점이자,
새로운 문명과 경험이 유입되고 동시에 우리의 문화가 외부로 퍼져나가던 시작점이었다.
개항시대의 나루터는 무역상에게는 큰 꿈을 품고 낯선 세계로 떠나는 출발지였고,
여행자에게는 새로운 문물과 이상 세계를 처음 마주하는 경계의 공간이었다.
우리는 이 ‘나루터’가 지닌 이동과 전환, 기대와 설렘의 감정을 오늘의 공간 속에서 다시 경험하고자 했다.
시나루는 과거를 단순히 재현하는 공간이 아니다.
인터넷과 이미지로 모든 것을 즉시 접할 수 있는 시대 속에서,
오히려 시간을 들여 이동하며 경험하는 감각을 되찾는 또 하나의 여행 공간이다.
개항시대가 품고 있던 새로운 세계에 대한 기대의 감정을, 현대적인 해석으로 다시 풀어내고자 했다.
그리하여 우리는 선박이 드나들던 ‘나루터’를 공간의 핵심 컨셉으로 설정했다.
전체 공간은 그 시대의 색감과 분위기, 디테일을 담되,
오늘의 시점에서 새롭고 비현실적인 경험으로 다가오도록 계획되었다.
SINARU, A Wharf Beyond Time
Located in the historic cultural district of Incheon Open Port, South Korea,
this place preserves over 130 years of history through its architecture, relics, museums,
and various cultural assets. Incheon Open Port was a pivotal gateway
where Joseon began its transition into a modern nation —
a place where new civilizations and experiences flowed in,
while Korean culture simultaneously expanded outward into the world.
During the Open Port era, the wharf was a point of departure for merchants
chasing great ambitions into unfamiliar worlds,
and for travelers, it was a threshold where they first encountered new cultures, technologies,
and ideals.
We sought to reinterpret and re-experience the emotions embedded within the idea of the “wharf”
— movement and transition, anticipation and wonder — through a contemporary spatial experience.
SINARU is not a space that merely recreates the past.
In an era where everything can be instantly accessed through the internet and images,
it instead becomes another kind of journey
— one that restores the sensory experience of physically moving through time and space.
We wanted to reinterpret the excitement and curiosity toward a new world
that defined the Open Port era, through a modern perspective.
Thus, we established the concept of the “wharf,” where ships once arrived and departed,
as the central narrative of the space.
The overall space embraces the tones, atmosphere, and details of that era,
while being designed to feel unfamiliar, surreal, and newly immersive from the perspective of today.
외부에서 건물을 바라보면 필로티 공간이 가장 먼저 시선을 사로잡는다.
이곳은 과거 나루터로 향하던 길이자 화려한 매표소의 입구를 연상시키며,
자연스럽게 행인의 발걸음을 멈추게 한다.
방문객은 마치 시간을 초월하듯 이 입구를 통과해 공간 안으로 진입한다.
From the outside, the building’s pilotis space is the first element to capture attention.
It recalls the pathway leading toward the historic wharf,
as well as the grand entrance of an old ticket office,
naturally drawing passersby to pause and step inside.
Visitors enter the space through this threshold as though crossing beyond time itself.
1층은 개항시대의 매표소를 모티프로 구성된 공간이다.
주문을 마친 뒤, ‘배 키’ 형태의 손잡이가 달린 문을 열면 비로소 여행자의 공간이 시작된다.
항해 지도와 책자, 망원경 등을 통해 목적지를 확인한 뒤, 비밀스러운 문을 열면 본격적인 여행이 펼쳐진다.
The first floor is inspired by the ticket offices of the Open Port era.
After placing an order, visitors open a door fitted with a handle shaped like a ship’s wheel,
marking the true beginning of the journey.
Maps, navigation charts, books, and telescopes guide travelers toward imagined destinations,
and once a hidden door is opened, the voyage fully unfolds.

이 배는 1/4의 형태로 구성되었으며,
기존 건축물의 기둥을 배의 구조처럼 활용하고 ㄱ자 벽면에 거울을 설치해
하나의 거대한 배로 인식되도록 계획했다.
이를 통해 실제 공간의 한계를 넘어, 체감되는 공간감을 네 배 이상 확장시키는 비현실적인 경험을 제공한다.
배의 돛은 사람들의 이야기를 담은 종이로 구성되었다.
다양한 문화와 기억이 담긴 오브제 아래에서 식음의 경험을 즐기며,
방문객은 각자의 새로운 여정을 마주하게 된다.
The ship was designed as a one-quarter structure,
utilizing the existing architectural columns as if they were part of the vessel itself.
Mirrors installed along the L-shaped walls visually complete the form into a single massive ship.
Through this illusion, the perceived scale of the space expands
more than fourfold beyond its physical limits, creating a surreal and immersive experience.
The ship’s sails are composed of layered papers containing people’s stories and memories.
Beneath these objects filled with traces of different cultures and experiences,
visitors enjoy food and drinks while encountering journeys of their own.
배에 오르기 전, 작은 방 하나가 등장한다.
이곳은 여행자가 떠나기 전 자료를 수집하고 연구하던 공간으로,
정박한 배를 바라보며 출발의 순간을 기다리는 장소다.
Before boarding the ship, visitors encounter a small room.
This space represents the traveler’s study — a place where one gathers materials and prepares for departure while gazing upon the docked ship, waiting for the moment of embarkation.
커다란 배 앞에는 작은 나룻배가 정박해 있고,
양쪽에 설치된 거울을 통해 끝없이 배가 이어지는 선착장의 풍경을 완성했다.
이곳은 이동과 정박, 시작과 머묾이 공존하는 나루터의 감정을 가장 상징적으로 담아낸 공간이다.
나루터는 여행자에게는 기대의 순간이었고, 외국인에게는 새로운 문물의 첫 발을 내딛는 장소였다.
시나루는 이러한 나루터의 감정을 단면이 아닌 다면적인 경험으로 풀어낸 공간이다.
과거와 현재, 현실과 상상이 교차하는 지점에서 이 프로젝트는 방문객의 새로운 상상을 촉발하며,
이를 공간적 경험으로 전환한다.
In front of the great ship rests a small ferry boat,
and mirrors installed on both sides create the illusion
of an endlessly extending harbor lined with vessels.
This is the space that most symbolically captures the emotions of the wharf
— where movement and stillness, departure and pause, coexist together.
For travelers, the wharf was a moment filled with anticipation,
while for foreigners it was the first step into an unfamiliar civilization.
SINARU interprets these emotions not as a single scene, but as a layered
and multidimensional experience.
At the intersection of past and present, reality and imagination,
this project sparks new forms of imagination within its visitors
and transforms them into spatial experiences.
