Saeraul is located in Yeonhui-dong, Seoul,
a neighborhood filled with quiet mansion-like homes that resemble peaceful gardens
in the heart of the bustling city. Along the calm alleys,
many of these homes have been gently transformed into bright,
wood-toned cafes and commercial spaces.
We wanted to offer a space that, while housed in a remodeled mansion like many others,
carries a different mood and unique content. In this tranquil garden-like setting,
we focused on the client’s desire for “complete rest within a mansion,”
and that became the starting point of our design.
The weathered concrete walls, marked with the passage of time,
and the rough texture of aged materials reflect the building’s long history
from its origin to the present. Without damaging the original character of the old house,
we breathed new life into the structure. Emphasizing the sense of place
and the brand identity born from “Saera + Ul,”
we aimed to create a space that communicates the client's vision
— a restful mansion that embraces the senses.
The name ‘Saeraul’ is a combination of
“saera” (a pure Korean word meaning ‘new’) and “ul” (meaning ‘fence’),
carrying the meaning of “a new and comfortable fence” for all who visit.
The goal was to create a cozy mansion
where visitors could rest and experience a sensory journey in a comforting environment.

[새라 – 새롭다의 순우리말 / 울 – 울타리의 순우리말 ]
이곳에 들리는 모든 이들에게 또다른 새로운 이곳이 편안한 울타리가 되어 즐기다.

복잡한 도심 속 한적한 정원 같은 저택들이 즐비하여 위치하고 있다.
조용한 이 골목 사이사이 기존에 위치하여있던 저택을 약간씩만 바꾸어
밝은 화이트톤에 따듯한 우드마감이 되어있는 수많은 카페와 상업공간이 자리한다.
우리는 이러한 공간들 속 저택을 리모델링한 공간이나 조금은 분위기가 다른, 새로운 컨텐츠로서 경쟁력을 갖추려 하였으며, 한적한 정원같이 조용한 이곳에서 건축주가 바라는 “저택 안에서 온전히 취하는 휴식” 이라는 키워드에 포커스를 맞추어 설계를 시작하게 되었다.
시간이 갈수록 점차 깊어지는 세월의 흔적이 깃든 콘크리트 벽
그리고 시간이 빚어낸 거친 질감의 마감재가 남아 있는 이 곳
이 곳의 탄생부터 현재까지의 역사를 담아낸 이야기가 건물에 켜켜히 쌓여있다.
오래된 건물이 가진 시간을 훼손하지 않는 범위 내에서 새로이 숨을 불어넣기 위한 이곳의 ‘장소성’
새라울의 뜻을 품은 ‘브랜드의 정체성’ 을 중심으로 클라이언트의 바램을 공유하고 싶은 이 공간은 포근한 대저택에서 감각을 느끼는 경험을 하며 휴식할 수 있는 공간을 선사하고자 하였다.
새라울
새로운 또다른 편안한 울타리라는 의미를 가진 ‘새라울’
새라울은 단어 그대로 여유롭게 걸어 다니는 웅장하고 조용한 대저택의 공간 속에서 머물며
각기 다른 자연의 또다른 모습을 느끼는 감성적인 경험들과 복잡하고 지친 일상 속 쉼의 의미를 재정의하고 되새기며 경험하지 못한 완전한 쉼과 편안한 안식을 주는 공간이길 바란다.
1F
1층의 대문을 열고 공간에 들어서면 공간 전체에 빛을 받아들일 수 있는 중정이 보이며 지하에서부터 올라온 푸르른 대나무가 빼곡하게 서있어 싱그러움을 준다.
폴딩도어를 열고 중층의 테라스에 앉아있으면 대나무가 바람에 흔들리며 내는 부드러운 소리를 들으며 중정을 통해 보이는 곳곳의 공간감을 느낄 수 있다.
옆의 복도를 따라 걸어 나오면 대저택의 높은 층고를 느낄 수 있는 웅장한 거실 공간을 맞이한다.
한쪽 벽에는 순백의 자개 오브제가 큰 커튼처럼 하나의 아트월이 되어 시간에 따라 다른 빛의 방향에 따라 반짝이며 공간내부에 또 다른 빛을 받아들이게 하며 한켠에 조용히 타오르는 벽난로의 불의 움직임과 어우러진다. 거실 중앙의 큰 소파에서 자개끼리 부딪히는 차가음 마찰음이 청아하게 가끔씩 퍼지며 차분한 정서적인 공간으로서 이 곳에 앉아있는 이들에게 편안한 휴식을 취할 수 있게 한다.
거실을 나와 작은 정원이 있는 앞뜰을 나오면 각기 다른 푸르른 나무와 식물들
그리고 초록색 빛으로 물든 수공간이 어우러져
녹색의 공간 속 따듯한 햇살과 함께 안온한 감각을 느낄 수 있다.
Upon entering the main door on the first floor, a courtyard appears,
welcoming light into the entire space. Bamboo rises densely from the basement,
providing a refreshing view.
Sitting on the mezzanine terrace, the gentle sound of bamboo swaying in the wind fills the air
while the surrounding spatial experience unfolds through the courtyard.
Following the hallway reveals a grand living room with a soaring ceiling.
On one side, a white mother-of-pearl art object drapes like a large curtain,
reflecting light from different angles throughout the day.
It softly interacts with the glow of a fireplace nearby.
From the central sofa, the delicate, cool sound of clinking mother-of-pearl pieces
occasionally rings out, creating a calm, emotional setting
that offers a soothing atmosphere for rest.
Stepping out into the front yard reveals a variety of lush trees and plants,
and a reflective water element tinted with green hues.
This interplay between soft sunlight and vibrant greenery creates a serene sensory experience.
수(水) 공간
지하의 중정 부분의 수(水) 공간은 바닥에서 물이 피어올라 원형을 그리며 퍼지는 물의 잔상을 일으키며 빛을 반사하고 그와 어우러져 바닥에서는 피어오르는 물안개가 끊임없이 움 직인다. 물결의 흐름을 따라 마치 춤추는 듯한 물안개의 흐름 속에서 끊임없이 움직이는 공간과 빛의 잔향이 어우러져 평소에 보던 자연의 모습이 아니라 또 다른 물과 안개의 언어를 사색할 수 있는 공간으로 연출하였다.
In the basement courtyard, water rises from the floor in circular ripples, reflecting light. Mist floats upward in a constant motion, dancing through the air. This space offers a contemplative view of nature—not in its usual form, but as a poetic dance of water and fog.

2층에서는 높은 층고에서 중정의 수(水) 공간과 푸르른 대나무와 1층의 거실을 내려다 볼 수 있는 테이블이 존재한다.
1층과 지하에서 느꼈던 부분들은 또다른 시각에서 새로이 감상하며 온전히 바라볼 수 있는 공간이며 중간 중간에 위치한 각 방마다 테라스가 존재하고 그안에는 또다른 작은 정원들이 있어 새라울의 공간 어디에서든 시간에 의해 자연스레 세월의 흔적이 있는 콘크리트와 작은 자연들을 바라볼 수 잇는 공간이 존재하여 내부의 어디에 있든 조용하고 편안한 휴식을 느끼게 기획하였다.
On the second floor, a table overlooks the courtyard, bamboo, and living room below. This vantage point offers a new perspective of what was experienced on the lower levels. Each room includes a terrace with a small garden, providing a place to view aged concrete and nature from anywhere inside the mansion, creating a quiet and restful environment.
